Speaking at the event, Mr Lam emphasised that amid climate change, rising input costs, and volatile markets, achieving a 4% growth rate in primary sector remains a challenging yet essential objective. This target aims to ensure sustainable development and maintain the supporting role of the agricultural sector in the local economic structure.
During the conference, representatives from provincial departments and localities reviewed the current growth situation in primary sector and proposed region-specific and field-specific solutions. Several practical recommendations were also raised to remove existing obstacles and boost production, ensuring the growth target of 4% or more in 2025
In addition, the representative of the Department of Agriculture and Environment presented the growth scenario for primary sector in 2025, including specific targets for rice, vegetables, fruit trees, livestock, and aquaculture. They also analyzed risk factors such as climate variability, rising production costs, and unstable export markets.
Meanwhile, the Department of Industry and Trade recommended enhancing agricultural trade promotion, building regional branding, and establishing long-term, sustainable links between farmers, enterprises, and distributors. It also urged the province to support agricultural producers in upgrading processing and preservation technologies to meet export requirements.
According to the proposed plan, primary sector is expected to grow by over 4% in 2025—comprising 3.52% in agriculture, 10.4% in fisheries, and 1.4% in forestry. This would contribute significantly to the province’s overall growth goal of 8.7% for the year and lay
To achieve these goals, Long An will focus on promoting the development of high-tech agriculture in the field of cultivation, converting the crop structure reasonably and effectively towards increasing added value and sustainable development, in accordance with market advantages and needs; building concentrated production areas, exploiting the potential and advantages of the province.
By 2025, Long An aims to produce over 3.266 million tonnes of rice, with high-quality varieties accounting for more than 80% of total output. Target outputs for other crops include 210,000 tonnes of dragon fruit, 207,200 tonnes of lime, 3,500 tonnes of durian, 49,950 tonnes of jackfruit, 30,510 tonnes of pineapple, 42,609 tonnes of coconut, and 229,246 tonnes of vegetables.
The province will also promote concentrated livestock farming using industrial and semi-industrial models with advanced technology, linked to centralised processing and slaughtering facilities. By 2025, meat production is expected to reach 94,197 tonnes (including 6,541 tonnes from buffalo, cattle, and goats; 22,000 tonnes from pigs; and 65,656 tonnes from poultry). Additionally, Long An targets 35,000 tonnes of milk, 838 million eggs, and eight tonnes of bird’s nest annually.
In aquaculture, the province will accelerate the application of science and technology, aiming for a total output of 167,300 tonnes in 2025. This includes 6,600 tonnes from capture fisheries (3,100 tonnes marine, 3,500 tonnes inland) and 160,700 tonnes from aquaculture (19,800 tonnes of brackish shrimp, 5,900 tonnes of freshwater shrimp, 126,000 tonnes of pangasius, and 9,000 tonnes of other freshwater fish). The province also plans to produce 100 million aquatic breeding stock.
In forestry, Long An will continue protecting existing forest areas and boosting afforestation efforts. By 2025, it aims to plant over 1.335 million scattered trees and reforest 500 hectares after harvesting.
Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee - Nguyen Minh Lam requested that sectors and localities closely coordinate and concretize the plan into clear targets and tasks. He also stressed the importance of closely monitoring market and weather developments to make timely adjustments, intensifying trade promotion, and expanding markets for Long An’s agricultural products. Finally, departments must identify key responsibilities for each sector to ensure coordinated, effective implementation of the growth plan and contribute to achieving the overall 2025 growth target for primary sector according to the general policy of the province in 2025./.
